  • Kirkhill Gala Queen Crowned

Kirkhill Gala Week has kicked off with a family céilidh and the Crowning of the Gala Queen, Princes and Princesses at the Community Centre on Saturday night. The Gala Queen Louisa Fairgrieve, Princesses Anna Knox and Catriona Johannsen and Princes Lachlan O’Flynn and Cameron McDonald were crowned at the start of the céilidh.

Sunday afternoon sees the Car Treasure Hunt with a BBQ at the Community Centre, starting at 4:00pm.

The full Gala Programme is available for download here.

  • Beavers, Cubs & Scouts Balloon Race

Instead of having individual stalls at the Kirkhill Gala this year, the Kirkhill Beavers and Cubs and Aird Scouts are uniting to organise a spectacular balloon race.

Balloon ‘numbers’ can be purchased for £1 each and then, on the day of the Gala, numbered tickets (complete with the organisers’ contact details) are attached to individual balloons which are filled with helium. These are then released from a giant net and float up, up and away.

Eventually, the tickets will fall to the ground and some are hopefully found. There is a £2 reward for reporting a found ticket, a £100 prize for the owner of the ticket which was found furthest away and a £50 prize for the ticket which was reported found first.

The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts have each been given a sponsor sheet for the balloon race containing 20 balloon numbers to sell to their friends and family. More balloons will be available to purchase on Gala Day prior to the spectacular balloon launch.

    Environmental issues

      • Latex balloons are used in the balloon race. These are hand tied and have no attached string or ribbons. Latex balloons are 100% biodegradable.
      • Rarely do the released balloons return to earth intact. Studies show that these balloons usually rise to an altitude of about 5 miles. At this point, the low temperature and pressure causes ‘brittle fracture’ which creates spaghetti-like pieces that scatter across a wide distance.
      • While some balloons do not reach this altitude, research indicate that in an average 500-balloon release, the unexploded balloon return density is no greater than 1 per 15 square miles.
      • Research shows that, regardless of the latex balloon’s ultimate form when it lands, it will decompose , forming a natural soil nutrient at the same rate as an oak leaf.
      • The paper used for the tickets is biodegradable.
  • Elements Camp 2012

Last weekend, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from Kirkhill took part in the Elements Camp 2012 at Dores on the banks of Loch Ness. Together with over 600 other Scouts of all ages from the Highlands and Islands, they took part in a number of activities related to the four elements of Earth, Wind, Fire and Water.

Bear Grylls, the Chief Scout, flew in as part of his whistle-stop tour of Scotland.

Here are a few pictures of the weekend, with credit to the photographer, Mairi MacDonald.

Many thanks to all the Beaver and Cub leaders and all the parent helpers who attended the camp. We hope you enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to the next camp!

  • Help needed for cycle path scrub up.

The Scout organisation as a whole is holding a community week throughout the UK where Scouts can put something back into the community.

Aird Scouts Group is inviting any member of our community to help out.

So this Thursday, 17th May, we will be providing help to keep nature in check by clearing weeds from the path between Inchmore and Reelig. The path has been narrowed by encroaching grasses so the Scouts are going to push them back!

What each Scout/volunteer will need is:

      a flat spade or trowel,
some gardening gloves (any gloves will do to stop blisters forming)
along with the usual waterproof jacket if it looks like rain.

We would also like parents to join in as well so we can make the maximum impact on the path so if you can come along that would be fantastic.

Meet at the Bog Roy Inn(The Inn Formerly Know as The Old North Inn) car park at 7 pm. Pick up as usual at 9 pm.

    See you then
