  • Cast wanted for local film

    Great Glen Film Arts are looking for voluntary actors and a production team to create a full length film drama based on Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. The film titled Celtic Jane will be shot at Moniack Castle and Reelig House and gardens.

    Cabrich based film maker Clive Malcouronne hopes to recruit the cast from nearby and start read throughs in September and filming in August. He’s looking for a cast of 24 actors, aged from 10 to 70, plus others that are interested in helping with the production.

  • Moniack Mhor Writers’ Centre Community Garden

    Moniack Mhor Writers’ Centre, located just outside Abriachan, has been selected to become a Beechgrove Community Garden in 2013. This means that, once the work is finished, the Centre will have fully accessible grounds with features like a Gaelic tree alphabet, extensive herb garden and a roundtable crafted from Caithness slate. It also means that the grounds – and our eco tutorial studio, set to open this autumn – will be available for community use when there are no courses running. The new building will be an ideal space for workshops and small performances, and the outdoor space suitable for picnics.

    As this project has come about completely through fundraising efforts, volunteers are essential to make this community garden a reality. Any members of the community are invited to come along on weekends in June and July to lend a hand and participate in the many workshops offered free of charge. These workshops include Planting for Wildlife, dry stone building, local archaeology and tree identity.

    Dates for the development weekends are 8-9, 15-16, 22-23 June and 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, 27-28 July. Saturdays will run from 11-4 PM. Sundays will run between 10-1 PM. Please don’t worry if you can’t make the times above, we’d love to see you even if it was for the odd hour or so here and there. Or if you prefer to be involved in other ways, any skills in fundraising or access to garden tools and equipment would be of great use as well.   • Explorer Scouts go climbing

    Last Thursday (23rd May) saw the Explorer Scouts out rock climbing at Duntelchaig, to the South of Inverness. Although the weather was not promising (it snowed on the journey out!), the Explorers enjoyed a great evening climbing up and abseiling down the rock face. For some of them, this was their first experience of climbing on real rock, with all the accompanying difficulties of the cold and wet, slippery rock. Fortunately, the weather brightened up, the sky cleared (almost) and everyone had a fantastic time.

  • Great line up for Kirkhill Gala 2013

    Gala Week – 18th to 25th May 2013

    Book you tickets now and clear your diary. There’s loads going on in this year’s Gala Week. And be sure not to miss local musical stars Duncan Chisholm and Julie Fowlis kicking off our own mini music festival on Gala Day.

    Gala Week

    New for 2013 is a Race Night on Saturday 18 May from 7.00pm in the Kirkhill Community Centre. Admission free and BYOB but over 18s only.

    Back by popular demand is the Fashion Show at Achnagairn House on Thursday 23 May from 7.30pm. Fashion by In Stitches with shoe and jewellery showcases and local entertainment. Tickets £12.50 includes a glass of bubbly. Sorry sold out!

    If you fancy a sing along and love those ABBA songs then come along to the Mama Mia night on Tuesday the 21st at 7.00pm at the Community Centre. Fancy dress is optional! Tickets on the door.

    We’ll also have all the old favourites including the car treasure hunt, bingo, pets parade, shinty, football and golf tournaments, fun run and quiz night. Check out the gala week programme for details.

    Kirkhill Gala 2012Gala Day – 25th May

    Gala Day is a little bit more special this year as we’re celebrating the opening of our newly refurbished and extended community centre. Everyone’s invited to the  official opening at 2pm by local musician Duncan Chisholm.

    Gala Day will be compered by Davie Robertson the Gala Queen, Laurie Mcphie, will be crowned by singer and multi-instrumentalist, Julie Fowlis, most recently known for her work on Disney Pixar’s Brave. Laurie’s princesses and princes are Morgan Mackintosh, Sophie Forbes, Kenny Ross and Archie Laird.

    Julie, her partner Eamonn Doorley and Duncan will also collaborate to lead off the afternoon’s music and our own wee music festival. There won’t be a seat on a bale to be had, so get there early.

    And in the main arena, there will be circus skills and stilt walkers from Fly Agaric, terrier racing and a display from the Territorial Army as well as dancing, shinty, fancy dress footie and tug o’ war. More details in the full Gala Day programme.

    Finally, to finish off a fantastic week the Gala Dance features the ever popular band Sharp Exit. Tickets are going fast so get yours now.

    Don’t forget all money raised during Gala Week supports our newly refurbished community centre and keeps running costs down.

  • Aird Explorer Scout Unit now up and running

    Based in Kiltarlity, the Aird Explorer Scouts Unit is now up and running and ready to go…

    We run an exciting, varied weekly programme, plus there’s something going on regularly in the region, and nationally, every few months; from weekend Challenge Camps to expeditions, there’s something for everyone.

    Inverness district has six local units and we join with them for challenges and events as often as we can – making lots of new friends along the way.
